Services
In 1977, a small group of individuals recognized the need for our community to offer support to battered women and their children.
They started taking turns answering a crisis hotline that was forwarded to their homes.
Some made room in their own homes for the women that had no place else to turn.
It soon was realized that the need was greater than anyone imagined.
As the third battered women's shelter to open in the state of Texas the agency went on to provide safety and support to hundreds of victims over the next several years.
The Purple Door, formerly Women's Shelter of South Texas, is a non-profit organization committed to serving individuals affected by domestic violence and/or sexual assault, regardless of when the violence occurred.

The following outcomes are monitored on a continuous basis by the agency in order to determine the most effective ways in which to assist victims in achieving and maintaining safe, healthy, and violence-free lives.
Evaluation of Services forms are provided to clients who complete the surveys on a voluntary and confidential basis.
The agency's leadership team reviews survey results at least quarterly to identify best practices, identify any issues that need to be addressed, and provide for continuous improvement to the programs and services conducted by the agency.
In the spring of 2015, Women's Shelter of South Texas staff and the Board of Directors began discussing the possibility of a name change.
After about one year of discussion by the agency's Board of Directors and staff, as well as analysis of the community awareness research, the Board approved the development of a strategic task force to research this initiative and develop a proposal for the rebranding of the Women's Shelter of South Texas.
The result is The Purple Door.
When the agency opened its doors in 1978 our name defined us.
