Only the finest solid woods are used; never finger jointed or other "engineered" products.
Our primary choice of wood is Spanish cedar; a visually appealing wood known for its stability and longevity-classified by the U.S. Forest Service as highly resistant to decay.
Spanish cedar is a deciduous tree (a hardwood) that grows from Mexico through Argentina, and is ideal for exterior architectural applications.
Its appearance is very similar to mahogany, but with a wonderful fragrance of aromatic cedar - hence it's name.

We strongly recommend oil based Marine Varnishes for the exterior finish.
Marine finishes have UV inhibitors added which allow them to withstand sunlight much better.
Avoid polyurethanes - they are harder, which tends to make them flake off and are more laborious to refinish.
You can research "long-chain vs. short chain" varnishes for a more detailed explanation.
Under no circumstances should a lacquer-based finish system be used on exterior doors.
Stain is a colorant, not a finish.
If you desire to change the color of your product, use an oil based stain.

There is a vast array of door hardware available on the market.
We will install whatever you choose, if we are building a new pre-hung door unit.
If we are supplying door slabs only, your carpenter must first fit the door into the existing opening.
Then the hinges are located from the jamb and installed.
Finally, when the door is properly fit and swinging, at that point, the lock set is installed.
We have a few definite thoughts concerning lock set types: Cylindrical (also referred to as tubular) mechanisms are preferable to mortise type sets.
