Taos Door And Hardware Company was formed in 1989 by Peter Barlow. Peter is an artist in every sense of the word. He excels at taking concepts and sketches and turning them into reality. If you can't find what you're looking for in the showroom, Peter will work with you to come up with the perfect custom design. Peter is good at communicating with people.
He can figure out what you want and put it on paper. He can look at a building and know what works, or interpret an idea from an individual's words and build it to your expectations. All products are prehung, fully stained and sealed to your specs, latch and lock installed and complete with weather strip, adjustable threshold, and door bottom. Casing is supplied if needed.
The units are ready for installation and use when they arrive onsite.

The doors shown on this site are all custom designed and one of a kind.
I do not have an accurate price list because every door I make is distinctive and priced individually based on the size, design and current wood prices.
Prices listed are general.
I work with the customer to develop an original design, and I can also build doors from photographs and sketches.
Please do not show me a picture of a door produced by another door company.
Buy the door from them, unless you want significant changes.

Taos Door & Hardware Co. special orders Spanish cedar that is plantation grown in Africa.
Most of the Spanish cedar available is from the rain forest of South America.
We no longer use rain forest growth.
We use mostly wood that is grown in the U.S. The northeast has the fastest growing forest because the hill farm land is no longer producing crops.
The trees are creeping back into the fields to reclaim them as forest.
Our pine comes from plantations in Oregon and Washington where the climate is suitable for fast growing pine.

I use only traditional, time proven construction techniques along with premium kiln dried woods to assemble custom, solid wood doors.
The joinery is very important so the door will not sag or come apart over time.
The mortise and tenon jointery combines mechanical strength with a large glue surface.
Each 3 inch long tenon is glued and through pegged with square dowels upon door construction.
Some designs, can have many of these handmade joints.
The mortise and tenon joint along with waterproof glue make a door that is incredibly strong, and will last a lifetime.

Surfaces are hand planed and profies Hand tooled then lightly distressed for a subtle aged surface.
This "scooped" surface is created by hand with carving gouges and features smaller "scoops" than on Custom Adzed.
A combination of adzed surfaces, hand tooled profies, and antique distressing creates the look of distressed and hand hewn wood.
Dents, scratches, simulated wood checking, "worm holes" and hand tooled edges create the look of naturally aged surfaces, similar to antique interior furniture.
