Lets update an old cabinet and make it look new again!
Start by taking a survey of your existing cabinets.
Most existing "face frame" cabinets will have large reveals (gaps between the doors and drawer fronts).
These reveals may as large as 1" to 2" in some cases.
A full overlay door will overlay as much of the cabinet face frame as possible to ensure a nice updated style for your new cabinets.
Using this tutorial we will give you a simple roadmap to making your outdated cabinetry look as good as new!
Lets say your opening is 10" wide by 20" tall.
If I wanted to put 1 door on this opening we would take 10" and add 3/8" to the left and 3/8" to the right.
This gets us a 10 3/4 wide cabinet door.
You would do the same with the height as well.
Take the 20" opening height and add 3/8" to the bottom, and 3/8" to the top.
This gets us a 20 3/4 tall cabinet door.
Thus, you will need to order a door with a width of 10 3/4" wide by 20 3/4" tall for this single opening.
If you have an opening with a pair of doors to be installed, it is actually very easy to calculate.
Order one of each piece seen below.
For example, if you have 1 cabinet door with 2 hinges on it, you will need to order 2 hinges.
Measuring cabinet doors from the single cabinet opening brings about a few obvious scenarios.
One, you have either lost or the existing doors have been removed and are no longer available.
Two, you are tired of the existing cabinet doors and wish to apply new doors to your existing cabinet boxes.
And three, most likely you are changing or updating the hinge type to something other than the existing hinge used on the old cabinet doors.
Order one of each piece seen above.
For example, if you have 1 cabinet door with 2 hinges on it, you will need to order 2 hinges, and 2 plates.
The frame-less cabinet is measured very similar to the standard face frame cabinets seen in most projects in the USA and Canada.
The European/frame-less design eliminated the need for a face frame which allows the hinges to attach to the inside of the cabinet case rather than the inside edge of a face frame.
The front edge of the case typically has an edge banding applied to the face to match the exterior wood type of the cabinet box.
